Process ideas for any piece come together in many ways. The piece called, In the Beginning, started from a couple of sketches. I sketch a lot. Some paintings combine several sketches, some sketches layout a rough draft of an entire concept. In the Beginning, started with a couple of sketches.
Laying Out the Design
When it came time to layout the design I made a copy of each sketch first. Then I placed them around the canvas until I decided where I wanted them. I knew the fish needed to be in the bottom third of the canvas where the ocean was and the giraffe in the area at the top in the sky.
The story of creation includes everything that God created in six days. That’s a lot! I decided to represent a selection that included the heavens, stars, oceans, land, land animals, underwater life, and plants. Still a lot for a 12″ x 16″ canvas.

Genesis 1:1-31 in the Bible tells us that, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth and everything contained therein. Beginning with deep navy blue at the top I created subtle variations in hues working my way to the grayed blue at the bottom. These colors are meant to represent the darkness of the universe, the heavenly sky in the middle, and the depths of the ocean. The stars, giraffe, plants, and fish speak for some of the other things God created in the beginning. This is a wonderful piece to teach children about creation and where we all came from.
